TEXT IN AFRIKAANS

"Contributes towards the incomplete knowledge of the renewable natural resources among the Tsonga. The emphasis is on agricultural practices, stock farming and the utilisation of trees, grass and wild animals, as found among the Mnisi of the Mhala district and takes into consideration their value judgements on nature and nature conservation, and their understanding of sustainable utilisation. The study describes an unrealistic number of people making a living on a meagre annual income determined by traditional subsistence farming methods and socio-economic realities, on insufficient land. The Mnisi are dependent on the overutilisation of existing renewable natural resources. The study explains the culturally determined characteristics of the Mnisi's evaluation of reality. The Mnisi's value judgements preclude large-scale spontaneous changes in their life style. The interrelatedness between existing reality and the culturally determined value judgments implies that such judgements will not change unless reality and the resultant epistemological base can be restructured."
