Lady Duff Gordon
The former Luci Austin was brought up in Westminster where her childhood play companion was John Stuart Mill, who lived next door, while on the other side lived an elderly Jeremy Bentham. She became a fluent speaker of both German and Latin and developed a reputation of writing skilfully and with originality. She became ill with tuberculosis and in 1861 went on a voyage to the Cape of Good Hope as treatment. Later she visited Egypt, traveling up the Nile and widely elsewhere in the country, later writing about the country. . . These letters were published initially in 1864 but those published in this volume were edited more accurately by her daughter, Janet Ross, and duly published by her.
