Die eerste lewe van Colet (1955) is 'n ontwikkelingsroman in kroniekvorm; die leser beleef die seun Colet se groei van kind tot jong volwassene (die tydperk is 1921 tot ongeveer 1942), met as fokus sy seksuele ontwaking. Hilaria (1957) volg daarop en vertel hoe Colet, na sy terugkeer van die oorlog (in die jaar 1946) help met 'n advertensieveldtog vir plastiek-blindings. Die mugu (1959) is n satiriese reisverhaal: die dooltog van Gysbrecht Edelhart deur die strate van Kaapstad.
