The three types of Burghers(citizens) were the so-called "Hands-uppers", men who eitherimmediately surrendered themselves to the enemy, sometimes even before theactual commencement of hostilities, or who decided to capitulate after only a shortperiod of time in the field. The "Joiners" were Boers who volunteeredtheir services to the enemy by acting as "National Scouts" or guidesfor the British troops in the field. They were generally considered to be theworst kind. And lastly, the "Bitterenders", those who vowed tocontinue fiighting until they were either killed or the war ended. This bookdeals with the first two. It is a strange thing to consider that the brothersof both General Piet Cronjé and General Christiaan de Wet, two of the mostfamous Boer War leaders, were traitors. De Wet vowed that he would kill hisbrother if ever he saw him again. There are lengthy descriptions of Piet de Wetand Andries Cronjé .
