The play deals with the present-day incarceration, in a psychiatric ward, of a one-time colonel in the South African security, police. Colonel Kilian was a man who tortured political prisoners, specifically the character Vusi, whose tongue he had cut out and preserved in a jar, joking that he was in possession of Napoleon's penis. Now, in a politically transformed South Africa, where the Truth and Justice Commission is in session, Kilian is incapable of understanding what has transpired, where he is, or what his future holds.
