In Liefde en Trou: die lewe van pres. en mev. M.T. Steyn by Karel Schoeman is a biography of (South African) President Steyn and his wife Tibbie Steyn. Steyn is described by Schoeman as a unique person, and the first modern Afrikaner.
his book epitomises Karel Schoeman's love for the Free State. Pres Steyn was a well-loved president and Mrs Steyn the daughter of Dr Colin Fraser, the Scottish minister colleague of Dr Andrew Murray. Fraser served the Philippolis NG congregation for nearly half a century, before and after the Anglo-Boer War, preaching in English for some ten years until he had mastered Dutch. It was not surprising therefore that Tibbie and Marthinus wrote to each other in English.
