DF du Toit was one of the eight founding members of the Society of Real Afrikaners. To the public he is known as Oom Lokomotive, the name under which he writes regular columns in' Di Patriot'. From 1876 he served on the editorial board of Di Patriot and then in 1878 became the permanent editor of the newspaper, a task he fulfilled until 1891. In this capacity, he determined the editorial policy of the paper and was also co-founder of the printing press that bears his name, DF du Toit & Co.
This is one of the publications of that press and consequently one of the first publications in the Afrikaans language.
