Honderde jare gelede, in die dae toe kasteelhere nog oor die besittings en lewe van hul onderhoriges beskik het, het die rooi ridder deur die bosse geswerf. Hy het 'n rooi kleed gedra en op 'n swart perd gery. aan sy sy was sy swaard; oor sy skouer het sy boog en pylkoker gehang.Die rooi ridder was die skrik van wrede kasteelhere, maar die vriend en beskermer van die arme. As hy sy pyl op iemand gerig het, was die skoot nooit mis nie; as hy sy swaard teen 'n vyand getrek het, was daar geen hoop vir sy teenstander nie.Vir geen gevare het die rooi ridder gestuit nie. Die wrede onderdrukkers het hul tande gekners as hulle sy naam hoor. Hulle het hom in lokvalle gelei en soms selfs gevangene geneem. Maar geen toue kon die rooi ridder boei nie, en in geen tronk of kerker het hy gevangene gebly nie.
