Saam met Hein Willemse was Hans Pienaar in 1986 verantwoordelik vir Die Trojaanse perd, waarin hulle onderhoude gevoer het met mense oor die Kaapse noodtoestande in 1985. Die onderhoude is gevoer met n UDF-leier, n Prog-politikus, politieke organiseerders, ouers van beseerde studenteleiers, onderwysers en n swartbewussynsfiguur. En omdat dit vir daardie jare so n teer punt aangeraak het, is dit deur Taurus uitgegee. Andr Brink het in Rapport (28 Desember 1986) geskryf dat geen ander uitgewer in die land dit 'maklik met n tang sou aanraak' nie. En volgens Brink was dit van lewensbelang, of selfs 'oorlewingsbelang', dat dit gelees moet word: 'nie as n stuk 'politiek', as n 'linkse aanval' of wat ook al nie, maar gewoon as die woorde van mense wat self gesien en beleef het wat in ons midde gebeur het'.Hans Pienaar het aan n verslaggewer van Pretoria News (23 Januarie 1987) gese dat Die Trojaanse perd n aanklag teen die Suid-Afrikaanse pers was, aangesien die boek dit gewaag het om mense se persepsies, ondervindinge en gedagtes in n noodtoestand uit te beeld. Hy het baie sterk daaroor gevoel dat slagoffers van die onrus self hulle stories moes kon vertel. 'Victims are seldom allowed to tell their own experience - newspapers often use the excuse that they do not want to be guilty of incitement as a reason for not reporting on the emotional upheaval caused by unrest.'
