Dietes bicolour forms clumps of straight up sword-shaped leaves. The adult plant reaches a height of approximately 1 meter wide and 1 meter tall. Once the plant is established, it spreads by modified stems, (rhizomes), which are located below the soil surface. The flowers are about 6 cm in diameter.
The flowers are short lived, just one day, but many buds are produced, the plant is almost always in flower from October to January.
This plant grows in the wild, originally from the Bathurst region in the Eastern Cape, naturally near streams and marshy places. However this plant is also drought-resistant and frost-hardy. Ideal for use as an accept plant near ponds or pathways. It is an evergreen, suitable for use as a long-lasting ground cover. The plant is able to grow in poor soil, with little water. Useful when plants are needed to be established on poor subsoils after building. The ideal plant garden plant in South Africa, low maintainance, low water usage, and always green. The plant will grow in damp situations, and will tolerate light shade. In really hot regions of South Africa, partial shade would be better. For best results, plant in compost enriched soil.
