Digimon World: Next Order brings the classic monster-raising formula back to the forefront, blending real-time combat, exploration, training, and survival mechanics. Its a title made for longtime Digimon fans, offering nostalgic charm and deep raising systemsthough its repetitive structure and demanding micromanagement may not appeal to everyone.
At its core, Next Order is a partner-raising RPG. You manage two Digimon simultaneously, each with needs such as hunger, fatigue, discipline, bathroom breaks, and training goals. The games day/night cycle means you're constantly juggling care tasks and exploration.
Combat is semi-real-time: Digimon act automatically while you issue commands, boost stats, or trigger special attacks when order power builds. Theres strategy in coordinating two Digimons move sets, but battles can feel chaotic and hands-off.
The gameplay loop revolves around:
Training in town to strengthen your partners.
Venturing into fields to gather materials, battle foes, and progress the story.
Recruiting Digimon to expand and improve Floatia (the hub town).
Its satisfying but can become a grind due to repetitive training and short partner life spans (they eventually die and are reborn).
Youre pulled into the Digital World during a crisis: hostile Machinedramon are ravaging the land. Your task is to rebuild Floatia and uncover the cause of the corruption. The plot is simple but charming, leaning heavily on classic Digimon themes like friendship, growth, and perseverance.
Much of the story unfolds through recruiting Digimon, giving it a communal, world-building feel rather than a tightly driven narrative.
The dual-partner system is the games standout feature. Each pair evolves differently based on stats, discipline, weight, victories, and care mistakes. The complexity gives you freedom, but it can feel overwhelming for newcomers.
Your partners also rebirth after a set lifespan. This mechanic encourages long-term planning but may frustrate players who form attachments to specific Digimon.
Main Story Campaign
A lengthy adventure across multiple static zones, with a focus on recruitment and exploration.
Town Building
Recruited Digimon unlock shops, facilities, and services, adding progression outside of combat.
Training Facilities
Stat-boosting mini-activities that consume much of the early to mid-game.
No multiplayer exists in this version; its a purely single-player experience.
The art direction stays faithful to the Digimon aesthetic, with vibrant environments and colorful creature designs. However, the visuals are noticeably low-budget by PS4 standardstextures are simple, animations are stiff, and environments can feel empty.
Performance is steady, but this is clearly a Vita-era game upgraded for console.
The soundtrack fits the adventurous tone, featuring upbeat tracks during exploration and energetic themes in battle. Voice acting is serviceable, but some dialogue scenes drag on. Digimon cries and combat sound effects deliver plenty of nostalgia for longtime fans.
Digimon World: Next Order is a love letter to fans of the original Digimon World formula. Its deep raising mechanics
