Dill is an annual herb in the celery family, Apiacaea. The leaves and seeds are used as a herb or spice for flavouring food.
Dill grows up to 40-60 cm, with slender hollow stems and alternate, finely divided, softly delicate leaves 10-20 cm long. The flowers are white to yellow in small umbels of 2-9 cm in diameter. The seeds are 4-5 mm long and 1 mm thick, and straight to slightly curved with a longitudinally ridged surface.
Dill prefers warm to hot summers in full sun, planting in partial shade can reduce your yield. The seeds can stay viable for 3-10 years, depending on the storage method used.
Dill makes a great companion plant as it attracts many beneficial insects as the umbrella flower heads go to seed.
Plant Dill with cucumbers and broccoli. Tomatoes will also benefit from Dill when they are young, since they repel harmful pests while attracting pollinators.
