You are looking at a vertebra of the marine reptile, Tylosaurus sp. from the Late Cretaceous Period, Sulphur River, Texas, USA. It is a well detailed specimen measuring 39mm x 29mm x 10mm. This species of Mosasaur grew to about 15 metres (50 feet) in length and Tylosaurus means “swollen lizard”. Mosasaur fossil remains from the United States are very rare and often so poorly preserved.
