Diocletian, Potin tetradrachm of Alexandria, Egypt (284 AD - 305 AD)

Bronze, diameter approx 19 mm, weighs 7.19 gr

Caius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus had a humble beggining but worked his way through the Roman military ranks. He became emperor after the assassination of Carinus. Before that the Empire was on the verge of collapse but Diocletianus introduced a number of reforms. These reforms prolonged the Empire but also removed many personal freedoms. Diocletian became the first Roman emperor to abdicate voluntarily. He lived out his retirement in his palace on the Dalmatian coast, tending his vegetable gardens. His palace went on to become the centre of the modern day city of Split.
