Discovering Southern African Rock art explores the research undertaken in the attempt to understand the rock art of the San people - how the research started, its failures and successes, and some of its debates. J.D. Lewis-Williams examines San spiritual experiences and religious rituals which shed new light on the meaning of the paintings: "It even seems likely that most, possibly all, of the artists were themselves shamans who painted and engraved trance visions of the spirit world and symbols of the supernatural potency that enabled them to achieve their transcendent states". The images contain highly complex, nuanced symbols and metaphors.

David Lewis-Williams is Director of the Rock Art Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand.
