There is no need to remove the cover from your phone in order to use the speakers.  The cradle is big enough to accommodate both cover and phone.

You can recharge your iPhone 4 and the unit at the same time, whilst listening to your favourite music.  Battery lasts for at least 8 hours (tested) before recharge was necessary.  The light at the bottom of the unit tells you when it is charging, on and charging in the off position, by changing colour.
