Very rare 1968 Double frosted 1oz gold Proof Kruger Rand. Low mintage with only 1044 frosted proof Kruger Rands produced that year. One of the lowest mintage years. Bought directly from the South African Gold Coin Exchange as proof mint. Still in original container.
The 1968 double sided frosted Proof Krugerrand was supposed to be the minted Proof Krugerrand of that year. However a mistake was made and the mint produced 9000 to 9500 of the single frosted Krugerrand with only the Springbok being frosted.
Later, 500 to 1000 of the correct version were minted. Some of the double sided Proof Krugerrand were not of a high enough quality to be accepted as a Proof and were rejected as proofs so very few double sided Proof Krugerrand existed. Only around 8 have been recorded as being certified.
Another strange phenomena was that the 1968 and 1969 Proof Krugerrand were still being offered to the public in 1972 by the SA mint.
However by 1976 the 1968 double frosted Proof Krugerrand was selling for R3500 whilst bullion Krugerrand were selling for R141.00.
However, a good estimate for a 1968 double frosted Proof Krugerrand would be about 110% of the gold price.
