Nicolaas Johannes vd Merwe was n stigter en eerste voorsitter van die FAK en het dit gebly tot sy dood. Ook van die Voortrekkerbeweging was hy die eerste nasionale leier. Hy het in 1916 getrou met Tibbie, tweede jongste dogter van pres. M.T. Steyn.
