- High qualitSpace Shuttle Columbia (OV-102) was NASA's first operational Space Shuttle. First launched on April 12, 1981, on mission STS-1, Columbia completed 27 missions before it was destroyed during re-entry on its 28th (STS-107) on February 1, 2003 after a 16-day scientific mission. All seven crew members were killed.


Columbia  arrived at the Kennedy Space Center on March 25, 1979. As the second orbiter to be constructed, yet the first to be able to fly into space,  Columbia  was roughly 8,000 lb. (3,600 kg) heavier than subsequent orbiters, such as  Endeavour , which were of a slightly different design and benefited from advances in materials technology.  Columbia  was the only space shuttle that was operational during both the Shuttle-Mir and International Space Station programs, but never visited  Mir  or the  ISS  as it had an internal airlock and was not suited for those missions.

Columbia  was named after the Boston-based ship captained by Robert Gray. In 1790, Gray led Columbia on the first American circumnavigation of the globe. In May 1792, Gray and his crew sailed into the estuary of the Columbia River (named by Grey after the ship), becoming the first recorded American to navigate into it.
