Dragon's Blood Tree (You are bidding on 100 seedlings)

(Dracaena draco)  Hardiness zone 9 - 11

This is a magnificent, fascinating plant of ancient beauty... a living fossil and extremely rare!

Commercial cultivation of Dracaena draco

Tremendous Commercial Potential in South Africa

Dracaena draco is rapidly becoming one of the most soughtafter sculptural feature plants in modern landscaping worldwide.  At first glance, palm - like in form and habit, it is like no other tree.  With succulent branches, and strap like leaves, thick smooth trunk and blue-green foliage, even when young, Dracaena draco projects an aura that few plants can match.  Some have even called it the "ultimate in architectural planting."

Dracaena draco is endemic to the arid, rocky mountain ranges of the Canary Islands, Madeira and Cape Verde.  It is threatened in it's natural habitat, and until recently, has only been present in rare collections and botanical gardens of various countries.  In the last 10 years, however, it's popularity has exploded particularly in the warmer areas of U.S.A, New Zealand and Australia.

Judging by the unprecedented popularity of other sculptural plants such as Aloe barbarae, there is sure to be a high demand in South Africa too, both from landscapers and retail nurseries.  This presents enterprising growers with an ideal medium term investment opportunity.

Interesting Facts

The name Dragon's Blood Tree has mythical origins:  for his 11th labour, so the legend goes, Hercules had to bring back three golden apples from the garden of the Hesperides, which was guarded by Landon, the hundred - headed dragon.  Hercules killed Landon and his blood flowed out over the land, which began to sprout 'dragon' trees.  (The tree exudes 'dragon's blood' - a red sap, when cut)

For centuries in Europe, the hardened resin of Dracaena draco was traded as 'dragon's blood' and highly valued by alchemists for it's supposed magical and medicinal properties.  The ancient Egyptians also used the sap for embalming.

The resin is still used today to produce a unique red lustre varnish used to coat expensive wood, especially that which is used to manufacture musical instruments such as violins.  Of course, the main reason reason for it's popularity today is it's striking form.
