Drakengard (known as Drag-On Dragoon in Japan) is a dark fantasy action roleplaying game developed by Cavia and published by Square (Square Enix) for the PlayStation 2. The PAL version refers to the regional release for Europe, Australia, and other PAL territories (as opposed to NTSCU or NTSCJ regions).
Released in 2003, Drakengard blends groundbased hackandslash combat with aerial dragonriding missions. The game is known for its dark, mature narrative, bleak tone, and unconventional storytelling. It explores themes of war, sacrifice, fate, and moral ambiguity.
You follow Caim, a young warrior whose sister is mortally wounded in a brutal conflict. In desperation, he forms a pact with a red dragon named Angelus, giving up his ability to speak in exchange for wings and power. Together, they battle monstrous foes and armies across a fractured world while confronting unsettling truths and difficult choices.
The narrative is delivered through multiple branching endings, some of which are surreal and unexpected a hallmark of the series and one reason Drakengard has maintained a cult following.
Ground combat: Fastpaced action fighting hordes of enemies with combos and weapon upgrades.
Aerial missions: Players pilot Caims dragon, engaging in highaltitude dogfights and missionbased objectives.
Progression: Characters level up, unlock powerful magic, and improve equipment.
Tone: The games combat and story are harsher and more melancholic than typical RPGs of the era.
The PAL release runs at a slightly different speed/format compared with NTSC versions and includes text and voice adaptations for European markets. It may also feature multilanguage support on the disc depending on the country of release.
Drakengard established a unique identity with its introspective drama, disturbing atmosphere, and genremixing design. It spawned sequels and spiritual successors including the critically acclaimed Nier series and remains of interest to fans of darker, storydriven action games.
