Magic Forest is a forest romance. It's the story of an initiated 'bushwoman's intimate connection to the tree heart of the forest, and how it became a barrier in her experience of the man she loves. Karoliena Kapp is an only child whose mother had three husbands, and who figures as a truly unsympathetic mother. Her father was struck to death by a lightning bolt early on, and she accepted the forest as her primordial mother. Karoliena is beautiful; she is spotted early on by a man, John, a forest worker's child who has wriggled himself free from the stranglehold of forest poverty. Even before she is twenty, Karoliena is "married" off to him, and must become a village owner after being schooled to take her place in this hierarchy. The world of the forest and of the village is painted in fine contrast to each other. These are two orders of existence. In the forest, a mystical experience is possible this is the kind of rapture Karoliena seeks while the town existence is devoted to a self-directed quest for money. She is in love with Johannes much older than she and is half-captivated by the new prospects he offers her. But Karoliena uses the very first opportunity to walk away from Johannes, straight back to the forest. Because the day after the marriage, she knows that t"something, somewhere, terribly wrong." She made the wrong choice: she fled from the forest. She exchanged her precious freedom for a chew. Now she's scared. So she takes the road back to the forest, while the peeping canary shouts non-stop: "who's-you, who's-you".
