Description: Dresden Rosenthal porcelain Chocolate Cup Estimated date 1890-1920 Ref. C-97
Maker: Rosenthal, Dresden, Germany
Date: Estimated 1890 - 1920
History: Philipp Rosenthal started the business in Bavarian Selb, purchasing whitewear from Hutschenreuther and decorating them. He established his own factory in 1891 at Asch. It was a very successful venture which eventually, by the 1930s, overtook more established factories like Kronach, Marktredwitz, Waldershof, and many more. In 1935, due to the Nazi regime, he was forced to leave and subsequently died in 1937. His son,Philip Rosenthal, tried to regain control of the company which he eventually succeeded in doing so by 1950.
Marks/Observations: A typical Chocolate Cup and Saucer with Dragon handle decorated with garlands and flowers and gilded highlights. The backstamp shows the date as 1890-1910 but I have not been able to ascertain why the back stamp is on a gilded flower, nor can I find any information on when the Dresden stamp was added. I believe this may have been an important piece.
Condition: Overall very good, tiny chip to the rim of the cup and one on the saucer (easy to repair)
Dimensions: The cup stands 95 mm to top of handle and is 67 mm in diameter. The saucer is 120 mm in diameter and stands 17mm high
Price: R450.00
