Honoré de Balzac's Droll Stories offers a delightfully irreverent collection of ribald tales, brimming with wit, satire, and a touch of the absurd. Set against the backdrop of Renaissance France, these short stories reflect Balzac's playful sidefar removed from the somber realism of La Comédie Humaineand draw clear inspiration from Rabelais, Boccaccio, and medieval folklore.

This 1961 edition from The Folio Society presents the stories in a lively English translation, enhanced by the imaginative and whimsical illustrations of Mervyn Peake. Though this copy is offered without the original slipcase, it remains a finely produced hardcover edition with decorative cloth binding, ideal for readers and collectors who appreciate classic literature with a touch of mischief.
