Die lewens van vyf Vrystaatse broers wat naby mekaar woon op die familieplaas, word uitgebeeld. As gevolg van die droogte boer hulle almal uit. Die lot en verarming en plaaslewe word uitgebeeld in hierdie klassieke werk.
