Offered for sale are a pair of striking and attractive ceramics in bold contrasting colours viz a Drostdy South African ceramic jug/ vase in a mauve-blue glaze colourway and a Langley UK clover shaped pin tray in a bright daffodil yellow glaze, both items dating to approx 1950's/60's. Drostdy Ware ceramics were made in the Eastern Cape as a subsidiary of Grahamstown Pottery and slip cast from locally mined white bodied clay typically glazed in monochromatic colours as is the case with this item which is in an unusual Hyacinth blue colour. The shape is modernist and shows the influence of Midcentury modern European ceramic design with a a sharply formed spatula like pouring spout contrasting with an elegant bulbous body and round pedestal base and large hooped handle. The Langley item is a clover shaped platter with elegantly rounded sides, the interior in a bright daffodil yellow and the reverse of the bowl in a pale celadon green glaze. Collectors partial to decorating with primary coloured ceramics could also consider acquiring pieces by Fiesta or Westinghouse, both American ceramic producers.
