According to the Natal Volunteer Record Lieutenant Nicholas Chiazzari, Natal Naval Volunteers, was granted the Distinguished Service Order in November 1900, for "working the punts across the Tugela at Potgieter's Drift and Colenso, and for service at Hlangweni Hill”.

In August 1902 he commanded the Natal Naval Volunteers Detachment at the Coronation of Edward VII.
He saw further active service with the Durban Militia Reserves during the 1906 Rebellion and during WWI with the Royal Engineers (Inland Water Transport).
