Correspondence on his file identifies him as a Natal Rebel who joined the Boer forces at Dundee. In support of his application De Waal wrote:

 

"During the night attack at Italenie, Zululand, on Sep 26th 1901, Burger M T Brink and myself carried late Burger Davie Louw, then wounded (badly) with broken leg and arm out & took him away about 5 yards from the forts, & myself getting 2 bullets through my hat".

 

Boer casualty returns confirm that David Abraham Johannes Louw, age 24, died the next day (27 September 1901)
