Dual Identity is a story of innocence lost, self-imposed exile, and adaptation to survive. Hannah and Tommy find bliss when they fall in love at first sight, marry, and have a child. After they learn that they are twins who were separated at birth, they move to Alaska. They survive and even thrive as they adapt to their new lives.
Hannah experiences the first catastrophe of her life when she learns that her adopted father is really her biological father. Her father, a college professor, had an affair with one of his students, and Hannah is the result. With her father dead and her mother with Alzheimer's, Hannah feels lost until she falls in love with Tommy at first sight. They marry and have a daughter. After several miscarriages, Hannah seeks out her biological mother to find out if there are any genetic factors that may be the cause. This leads to the second catastrophe of her life. She learns that she has a twin, and it is Tommy. They realize that their love is too great for them to separate despite the potential consequences. They must continue their incestuous relationship, but they can't live in the home they've loved. They banish themselves to Alaska to begin a new life with the help of Tommy's father who lives there. The move changes them into different people. They have dual identities as siblings and husband-and-wife, but now they also have dual individual identities. Both branch away from each other, Hannah to new people and Tommy to new ideas.
