The Arend-Schellings (Eagle Shillings) found on the wreck of the Meerensteijn wreck (1702) that was struck for the Dutch city Zwolle, dates from the 1670s. This one however dates from an earlier period. It was struck during the short reign of Matthias I (1612-1619). So it predates the founding of the Cape of Good Hope by more than 30 years.
