Description: Dutch Delft plate 18th Century. Ref. P/94
Maker: Delft, the Netherlands. Makers name is unknown
Date: Estimated date 1770 - 1800
History: Due to the successful importation of Chinese porcelain in the early 16th Century by the Portuguese traders, the potters of Europe soon tried to emulate these pieces.  The Dutch East India Company was also importing Chinese export ware back in the early 17th Century. The production of porcelain in Europe was still to be discovered but the Dutch soon found out that a white tin-glaze over their earthenware produced a finish not unlike porcelain. And, yes, although the tin glaze did chip a little and earthenware was not as thin as porcelain and certainly not as strong, by the late 16th Century, Delft blue had emerged.
Description: On offer is a typical Dutch Delft plate, estimated date is around the 1770s. The white tin glaze covering the plate was perfect for the artist who used a cobalt pigment to create the blue colour. It shows a floral garden with flowers to the left and a bamboo plant to the right, (influenced by Chinese designs). In front we see a small fence. The rim is painted with a yellow oxide colour and would have been painted on top of the glazing.
Condition: For its age, the plate remains in very good condition with just a few chips to the rim, but these are small. Typical blow holes are seen on the front and back and the glaze shows numerous tiny black spots which was due to contamination from the wood ash during the firing process.  Also on the back, three small frits are seen.  Frits were small wedge-shaped pieces of pottery which held up the plate during the firing process.
Dimensions: The plate is 23 cm in diameter and a height of 3cm
