1 x Dutch iris bulb

The Dutch iris, Iris × hollandica, is a popular bulbous flowering plant widely cultivated for its elegant blooms and suitability as a cut flower. It originated from hybrids developed in the Netherlands using several Mediterranean iris species. Today, it is grown in gardens around the world for its refined appearance and vibrant spring display.

This plant produces narrow, upright grey-green leaves that emerge from underground bulbs. In spring to early summer, tall, slender stems carry sophisticated flowers with upright inner petals and broader, drooping outer petals. The blooms are available in a range of colours including blue, purple, yellow, white, and bi-coloured combinations, often with contrasting markings that enhance their ornamental appeal.

Iris × hollandica is especially valued in floral arrangements due to its long stems and long-lasting flowers. In the garden, it is commonly planted in borders, containers, and mass plantings, where its vertical form and vivid colours create striking seasonal displays. Its neat growth habit also makes it suitable for more formal planting schemes.

Growing Iris × hollandica is relatively easy in sunny, well-drained positions. The bulbs prefer fertile soil that does not remain waterlogged, particularly during dormancy. Regular watering during active growth supports healthy flowering, but excessive moisture can cause bulb rot. In colder climates, the bulbs are generally frost-hardy, while in warmer regions they benefit from a dry resting period after flowering. With suitable conditions, Dutch irises provide reliable and elegant spring colour year after year.
