Dwarf Pomegrate is a more compact pomegranate variety. This dwarf version of the fruiting pomegranate is perfect for container gardeners. It fruits very freely and is suitable for growing in pots, making it perfect for growing in a greenhouse, on a patio or balcony. It grows to a height of between 60 - 120cm. In summer, orange-red, funnel-shaped flowers are produced, followed by round edible fruit measuring up to 5cm across.
Growing Dwarf Pomegranate
You should start your Pomegranate seeds indoors over the winter and then plant them outside in the spring after the last threat of frost.
In a pot with seed starting soil, plant the seeds no more than 1/4 deep.
Place your pot in a warm, sunny spot and make sure to keep the soil moist.
Place the pot in a sunny, warm window, and keep the soil moist as your pomegranate germinates and grows.
For added humidity and warmth during winter, you may find it helpful to cover the pot loosely with a clear plastic bag until the seeds have sprouted.
When the weather warms in spring, you can harden off the plants, before moving them permanently outdoors.
Pomegranates are drought-tolerant, and can be grown in dry areas with either a Mediterranean winter rainfall climate or in summer rainfall climates.
In wetter areas, they can be prone to root decay from fungal diseases.
They can be tolerant of moderate frost, down to about 12 C.
