Bacteria in Drinking Water
Bacterial contamination in drinking water has been an issue for many years. From 1920 through 1960, there was an epidemic of typhoid fever that was spread by contaminated water. Typhoid is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria that grows in the intestines. In unsanitary conditions, water becomes contaminated when it comes in contact with the faeces of an infected person. Officials were able to get control of those particular bacteria, but this only made room for others to take their place.
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are gram-negative bacteria and are a type of faecal coliform bacteria commonly found in the intestines of animals and humans. They are invisible to the human eye and can only be seen using a microscope. Their growth can be seen as colonies on agar media under special conditions. Most E. coli do not cause illness but if a person becomes sick from E. coli, the primary site of infection is the gastrointestinal tract and symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever.
How to Test for Bacteria in Your Water
Whether you have city water or well water, it is important to test your water at least once a year for bacteria. Well water is not regulated, and it is up to the well owner to test the water quality. Municipal water is regulated, but each state has different testing requirements and regulations. Testing your water yourself is the best way to make sure it is not contaminated.
