Oil on board, signed E van der Merwe / C van der Merwe ????
According to the Berman book on SA art and artists, Eben van der Merwe was born in
Bloemfontein in 1932 and in 1958 he was the youngest of the foundation members of the
Bloemfontein Group. It states that his early work showed influence from Boonzaier, but it
was to Cezanne that he looked for aesthetic direction, gradually moving towards abstraction.
Is this painting by E van der Merwe and Eben van der Merwe the same person? You decide...
