The author was an English army officer, who served in the War of the Axe, an astronomer, author, and friend of Arthur Conan Doyle. A description mostly of hunting and warfare in Natal. This book is a reissue of The Diamond Hunters of South Africa, published in 1889.

Published by Griffith Farran Browne & Co., Limited, undated. Original red cloth with gilt stamped titling and decorative scene on the front, marked in places, and with wear to edges, and a short tear at the head of the spine. Intact frontispiece guard, and 283 pages with marginal illustrations and twenty others by A.W. Cooper.
