Early Georgian Caughley/Coalport 'Pickle'Dish, 1790-1810  Ref.CC2a

At the end of the 18th Century, Coalport was a small village on the banks of the river Severn.  Although the settlement was called 'Coalport' due to the ferrying of coal brought down by canal to the waiting ships, the area dates back to the Roman period as a producer of pottery. Like many of his contemporaries, John Rose started life off as an apprentice, at the Caughley Porcelain Manufacturer.
Evidently, his work and design skills caught the attention of a wealthy businessman, Edward Blakewood and they opened a small pottery together.  By 1799 they had bought the Caughley works and transferred the factory to Coalport.  They produced a very good hard porcelain stronger than the soft porcelain which was the norm, but lacking somewhat in its gray color.  However, it became very popular, and the company worked on producing mainly hand-painted and blue and white transfer printed ware with an under-glaze blue.  The idea was to imitate the early Chinese Export Ware which was no longer being imported, but the Oriental designs were still very much in vogue.

The Coalport factory became a market leader by the 1800's especially with their vibrant 'Japan' patterns. By this time, there are known to have been around 1400 different designs, not including their original blue-and-white patterns.  Among their most famous patterns is the 'Willow' pattern.
In 1820, they produced a new hard, transparent and highly lustrous lead-less glaze which revolutionized the market as well as producing a superior, bone china porcelain.
By 1851, the company had won the coveted 'Gold medal' at the Great Exhibition in London.

This is a early Staffordshire pickle dish, dating to the late 1790-1810 period. Earthenware, with an early transfer-printed decoration in the blue 'Willow' pattern. It has relief molded veins of a leaf on the back and is typical of the Caughley factory. Made from earthenware, it shows an early transfer printedSome small chips/nibbles to the rim, commesurate to its age. It measures16cm in length and 12.5 cm at its widest point and stands 4cm high.

This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
