Early Rare Ethiopian Wooden Icon or Shrine
This wonderful very early authentic piece has been hand carved out of two pieces of wood, which have had small holes made into the sides through which string has been tied like hinges so that it opens like a book. The outer sides and edges have been carved and engraved with unusual patterns. The inside of both panels have been beautifully painted in colour. This portable shrine or icon from the early 1900s is part of a small collection of early African & tribal items that I'll be listing in the next few weeks. Most of the pieces had been originally labelled by the previous collector. The label on this read 'Wooden Painted Icon Ethiopia'. Its in great condition for its age and measures 16cmx 9.5cm x 3.2cm and weighs 215g. Open, it measures 16cm x 17,cm x 3.2cm
