Early Staffordshire Child's Plate 1810-1820 - Ref aug10

Longport was a pottery district in Staffordshire, not more than two kilometers to the south and just west of Burslem and Tunstall, both renowned  pottery towns. Although a smaller area, Longport had some very important potters, including Davenport, Henshall & Co, Edward and George Phillips, Rogers and Joseph Stubbs. But, like many other pottery districts, there were numerous smaller potters who did not leave their mark and may have only lasted a few years.

The Child's Plate offered is thought to have originated from one of these smaller potters in Longport. I believe it dates back to around the 1810-1820 period, although it may well be closer to the 1800's date. This is a hand-painted plate, showing a house in a typical Chinoiserie style and  executed in a pink luster which was then gilded. Although the design shows up as a pink color, the gilding can be seen when the plate is tilted slightly. It is an overglazed plate, meaning that the plate was originally glazed with a white 'pearlware', and, then handpainted, re-glazed and re-fired.  Evidently, it was a plate meant for a wealthy household. The plate shows an impressed, raised border of alternating pin-wheel daisies. It shows an uneven and fairly thick glaze  (glazing techniques had yet to be perfected) with numerous bubbles and small black spots, which would have been due to the oven being fired by coal.

There is a impressed makers mark of an oval 'flower' on the reverse.  We cannot trace this maker, but, there are records of a round, six-petaled impressed mark from a company in Longport, and a similar round impressed mark with numerous petals. In both cases the makers name in unknown. One can only surmise that the oval 'flower' mark is likely to have been from the same company.
There is a small chip to the rim at the top of the plate, no other damage can be seen. There is some rubbing to the rim of the plate and, in the center of the 'house' there are two small 'lumps' of fired
clay. The plate has a diameter of 17.5 cm and stands 2.5 cm high.

This is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
