Société Céramique Maastricht was a major Dutch ceramics manufacturer founded in 1851. A key rival to Petrus Regout (later Sphinx), it merged with Sphinx in 1958 to form N.V. Sphinx-Céramique, later known as Royal Sphinx. The former factory site is now the Céramique district in Maastricht.
Geeral Koos de la Rey (18471914) was a key Boer leader during the Second Anglo-Boer War, renowned for his guerrilla warfare and strong leadership. Post-war, he became active in politics, championing Afrikaner rights. He died tragically in 1914 after being shot at a police roadblock
