A fine example of a "main gauche" - a dagger of the 16th and 17th centuries, held in the left hand in dueling and used to parry the sword of an opponent. This Spanish example dates from the early to mid 20th Century and was manufactured in Toledo. It has an intricately engraved, fine quality steel blade and decorative cross guard and pommel. The wooden handle appears to be solid walnut.
Toledo steel, historically known for being unusually hard, is from Toledo, Spain, which has been a traditional sword-making, metal-working center since about the Roman period, and came to the attention of Rome when used by Hannibal in the Punic Wars. It soon became a standard source of weaponry for Roman legions. Toledo steel was famed for its high quality alloy.
The dagger is in good vintage condition with slight tarnishing to the blade. It feels well balanced in the hand.
Length (dagger) : 49cm
Length (blade) : 31cm
