EAST ARICAN and ABYSSINIAN campaigns - NEIL ORPEN
South African Forces - World War 11
Volume 1
When war broke out in 1939, South Africa - like the rest of the Commonwealth of those days - was quite unprepared. Yet by April 1941 she had more than 43,000 men fighting on land and in Air in East Africa, while building up her army at home and training tens of thousand of men for service future afield. It was a fine achievement and it was all done by volunteers.
The East Africa and Abyssinian Campaigns tells in authoritative detail for the first time the full story of South Africa's outstanding contributions to victory in East Africa in 1940-1. At the same time it provides a complete history of the series of operations directed by East Africa Force which, in conduction with those carried out under Sudan Force in Eritrea, resulted in this first totally successful campaign conducted by the Allies in World War 11.
No other theatre of war during 1939-45 presented quite the same problems as East Africa and Abyssinia, and in no other theatre was any British commander so well served by fighting units and formations which - apart from a few Indian gunner - came entirely from Africa. Not only by providing first-class motorized infantry and almost all the air force, but also in contributing highly specialized ability and equipment in Engineering line, in the Medical and Transport Services and in all branches, South Africa played the leading part in the conquest of the Italian East Africa Empire and in the liberation of Abyssinia. .......
