1 x Echinopsis oxygona plant in 5cm square pot exactly as pictured

The Easter lily cactus, Echinopsis oxygona, is a globular cactus native to grasslands and open habitats of southern South America, particularly in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. It is widely cultivated around the world for its ease of growth and spectacular floral displays.

This species forms rounded to slightly elongated stems with prominent ribs lined by clusters of short spines. Over time, it readily produces offsets around the base, forming dense clumps. The plant is best known for its large, funnel-shaped flowers, which can be pink, pale lavender, or occasionally white. These blooms are often much larger than the cactus body itself and open during the evening or early morning, creating a striking contrast against the compact stems.

Echinopsis oxygona is highly regarded among cactus enthusiasts for its vigorous growth and reliable flowering. Mature specimens can produce numerous blooms during the flowering season, and established clumps often create impressive displays. Its adaptability and tolerance of a range of conditions have made it one of the most widely grown species in the genus.

Growing Echinopsis oxygona is straightforward and suitable for beginners. It prefers full sun to bright light and a well-drained, sandy or gritty growing medium. Watering should be regular during the active growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings, while winter watering should be kept to a minimum. It can tolerate light frost if kept dry but performs best when protected from prolonged cold and excessive winter moisture. With proper care, it forms attractive clumps and produces abundant flowers year after year.
