Edwardian Wylie & Lochhead Walnut inlaid fall front writing bureau in mint condition c1930's

This large stunning writing bureau is dated to the early 1900's as can be seen by the tags . It stands on beautiful cabriole legs with Acanthus carvings to the tops of the legs. The fall front has an automatic mechanism for the supporting struts which extend and retract with the lid and boasts a leather inlaid writing surface inside  .The front has exceptional detailing with an oval beaded finish to accentuate the piece . The drawers all have beaded edges and all work perfectly. There is a brass plaque inside confirming the age as this was given to Mr J Howard Tennent to celebrate his 21st birthday on 18th Jan 1936 by Whifflet Foundry in Coatbridge . There is a bakelite manufacturers name tag inside the drawer flush mounted into the wood confirming the manufacturer. I am absolutely amazed at how well this has been looked after , there are some minor nicks that are barely noticable otherwise this still looks like a new piece of furniture considering the age . Dimensions are 915mm wide x 470mm deep and 1055mm high

Antique Furniture by the Scottish cabinet makers Wylie & Lochhead means the piece is going to be of superb quality and a very high level of craftsmanship. Wylie & Lochhead made antique furniture in traditional style like in the Chippendale designsbut also in the Arts & Crafts design. They were famous for their stunning selection of antique wardrobes, antique dining chairs and antique dining tables. In 1829 Wylie & Lochhead was started by cabinetmakers Robert Wylie and William Lochhead mainly as coffin builders but they quickly became very successful with many workshops and furniture showrooms in Glasgow, Scotland. Wylie & Lochhead became renowned for their artistic designs and high levels of craftsmanship especially in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Wylie & Lochhead most well known designers were E.A Taylor, John Ednie and George Logan. Their Arts & Crafts Furniture designs were considered of such high quality they were displayed at the Turin International Exhibition alongside those of Rennie Mackintosh and the Glasgow Four. Wylie & Lochhead soon opened showrooms in England in the large cities like London and Manchester but they also began selling abroad like in America.
