2 x Egyptian Walking Onion (purple) bulbs (see second picture for size)

(Allium × proliferum)

The Egyptian Walking Onion is a hardy, perennial onion known for its unusual ability to 'walk' across the garden. Instead of producing flowers and seeds, it forms clusters of small bulbils at the top of tall stalks. As these top-heavy stems bend to the ground, the bulbils root where they touch the soil creating new plants and gradually spreading year after year.

This vigorous onion produces strong-flavoured underground bulbs and hollow green leaves that can be harvested like spring onions. Both the top bulbils and the underground bulbs are edible, making it a highly productive and low-maintenance addition to vegetable gardens.

Extremely cold-tolerant and drought-resistant once established, Egyptian Walking Onion thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It is ideal for permaculture systems, edible borders, and gardeners who want a reliable, self-propagating crop.

Planting season: Autumn or early spring
Position: Full sun, well-drained soil
Harvest: Leaves year-round in mild climates; bulbils and bulbs when mature
