Sandeman, an English traveller-writer, arrived in Cape Town in 1878 to embark upon a leisurely journey through Natal and the Orange Free State to the Transvaal. Starting his expedition from Pietermaritzburg he travelled north through Escourt and Ladysmith, over the Vaal river to Heidelberg and Pretoria. He then turned east to visit the goldfields of Spitzkop and Lydenberg. His entertaining and informative observations on Boer lifestyle and attitudes, on the Bantu societies, on mining and hunting, were published as this reprint title. xix + xii + 425pp., frontis, illustrated foldout map. 17 monochrome plates. 150x220mm Tall.
