The book is a character study of a woman called Elizabeth who is a lonely lonely lady and her email address name is eleanor.rigby.
The book jumps from present to past where when she was a high school kid she went on a school trip to Italy and got drunk one night and returned home pregnant. In the present she is middle aged and finds out that the child she gave birth to has grown up and entered her life. But he has a terminal illness that is escalating fast and the two don't have much time to get to know one another.
I think this is one of Coupland's better efforts and is quite small in size and scope. This is good because it's quick and readable and won't put people off but it's also a bit too quick and feels a bit like a long short story. I also don't feel that this is a very memorable exploration of loneliness.
Having said that, it is readable and enjoyable and the scene toward the end of the book is very good (the one in the airport). This is one of Coupland's better efforts if not entirely memorable in it's way (I thought it was a bit too much like Wade and his mum's relationship in All Families Are Psychotic) but it's better than some of his other books like Miss Wyoming or the utterly boring Hey Nostradamus!
