This volume contains four plays by Sophocles (496 - 406 BC), who was the first to give to ancient Greek drama a structure recognizably related to its modern descendant. In Electra, he objectively presents part of the Orestean legend, while Women of Trachis is remarkable for the human verisimilitude imparted to a near-repulsive piece of mythology. Philoctetes portrays the struggle of right against might, and Ajar takes for its theme that of the great man fallen.
