The story's lead character is Elelwani, a young university educated woman but brought up in an environment steeped in tradition and has to choose between love and duty, between cultural traditions and modernity. Her parents have promised her hand in marriage to the Venda Prince as his third wife and as a dutiful daughter she wishes to obey their wishes and protect their honour. But in order to fulfil this promise of marriage to the Prince, she must relinquish her dreams of travel to further her education and most importantly her true love (Vele a young man she meets at university), to bear the Prince an heir.
Committed to respecting the customs of her ancestors, Elelwani complies with her parents wishes. But at the Royal Palace she discovers that the Prince is controlled by his powerful and self-willed half-sister who distrusts Elelwani and her self-confidence to question tribal customs. In uncovering the dark secrets of the Royal family, Elelwani becomes trapped by a web of deceit and discovers the Royal court's plot to have her killed.
This film is a story that reflects the importance of evaluating traditional values and cultural practices in light of social and political change. It is the story about a woman's courageous spirit to challenge the patriarchy of her community and to follow her heart to realize her dreams.
