The D-Lite is best compared to Elinchrom’s BXRi range of professional monoheads (a monohead has the power unit enclosed with the flash tube in the head and are less bulky than pack heads). In terms of power, recycling times, flash duration and power settings features, the two are almost too close to distinguish. Exposure is adjustable in 1/10th of the stop across a five stop range and  you can vary the settings of the modelling lamp and select which lights will slave or not. The difference is really in that the D-lites are fan-cooled but have fewer capacitors than the professional series so will automatically switch off from over-heating faster than the BXRi lights. This shouldn’t be a problem for the amateur taking a few shots, but this not the lighting series for the professional who needs all-day operable lighting packs. You will also be limited in your use of accessories like snoots and grids that tend to enclose more heat on the lamp and shorten the time before over-heating. Still, this is good value for money for an enthusiast who can also benefit from the compatibility with Elinchrom’s high quality and wide range of softboxes and reflectors.
